coda

Simple, so you can enjoy your music.

A music player for GNOME, written in Rust, that plays the Music folder as a whole: the artists on one side, their tracks on the other, in order or shuffled and with no gap between tracks.

coda playing on GNOME: the artist list on the left and the tracks on the right, with the playback bar at the bottom.

The whole library, not one album at a time

Pick an artist or "All artists" and coda plays the list on screen, in order or shuffled, with repeat. Switch artists or search for something else, and the next track comes from the new list.

coda window with the artists on the left and the tracks on the right, with title, album and length.

Find any track by whatever you remember

Search looks at every tag and the file name, ignoring case and accents. An album kept in more than one format is listed once.

Search for “oficios” listing the tracks of the album Roles y Oficios, by Orquesta de Perros.

As small as you need it

The mini player shrinks the window to the current track and the controls, and GNOME's media controls and media keys work with it.

Compact coda window with the current track and the playback controls.

More features

Playlists

Creating, editing and playing playlists is reliable, and they are not left in a corner of the app.

GNOME integration

The Shell's media controls and media keys (MPRIS), the Shell's search and a mini player.

Tags read correctly

Browsing by artist shows the artists in the library, not every guest on every track.

About the project

coda is a music player for people who keep their collection in a folder and just want to listen to it on GNOME. It starts from what GNOME Music gets right, its simplicity, and tries to fix what gets in the way: nobody listens to a whole day of music one album at a time, so the library can be played, shuffled and queued as a whole.

The visual load is low: lists of music come first, and cover art helps recognise an album but is not the layout.

Technologies

Rust, with GTK 4 and libadwaita for the interface; GStreamer for playback, lofty to read tags and SQLite for the library.

License: GPL-3.0-or-later

Sample material shown in the screenshots:

Install coda

Needs GTK 4, libadwaita, GStreamer, SQLite, blueprint-compiler, gettext, meson and Rust. To play, the GStreamer plugins for each format: base and good (FLAC, MP3, Ogg, Opus, WAV, WavPack) and libav (AAC, ALAC, APE).

From a release

The release tarball carries the Rust dependencies and builds with no network.

curl -LO https://gitlab.com/alteronauta/coda/-/releases/26.10.1/downloads/coda-26.10.1.tar.xz
tar xf coda-26.10.1.tar.xz && cd coda-26.10.1
meson setup --buildtype=release _release
meson compile -C _release
sudo meson install -C _release --no-rebuild

From source

git clone https://gitlab.com/alteronauta/coda.git && cd coda
meson setup --buildtype=release _release
meson compile -C _release
sudo meson install -C _release --no-rebuild

On a first install, the coda icon starts working after you log in again, and GNOME's search finds it from then on. The details are in the README.
